Frequently asked questions

What are the differences between plastics spas and your oak tubs ?
Huge! Our 1.055 m deep oak tubs provide a unique immersion effect that you never experience in a shallow plastic spa. With the scents released by the oak wood and the benefits of therapeutic massaging as well, there is simply no contest.

Why do you use oak ?
Oak is a “hard” wood (in fact VERY HARD!). It was originally the only wood used for holding liquids – notably the greatest wines. Our oak tubs are crafted following the methods of long-established local know-how. Oak has long been recognised for its exceptional natural resistance to decay. Besides, it is an excellent natural insulator, and has a wonderful aroma. It has proven to be one of the world’s best woods, if not THE best, for the purpose of making hot tubs. The availability of oak trees locally in the Champagne region is another advantage.

What are the advantages of a wooden oak tub ?
An oak tub is deeper than a plastic spa, and so can hold more people in relation to its size measured across. The feeling of complete immersion, and the touch and scent of the wood are incomparable. Made of oak, one of the world’s greatest traditional timbers, Maison Peletier hot tubs look different – beautiful – rustic. They can be easily shipped and assembled on site, piece by piece. They fit into the scene just about anywhere. Natural handmade wooden oak tubs are an aesthetically perfect addition to your garden.

Why do you use Ultraviolet (UV) to sterilise the water ?
The UV sanitizer is popular with tub users because it leaves no residual disinfectant in the water – there are no ozone smells. It uses the destructive radiation of ultra-violet waves to kill any and all live bacteria or algae in water. A small glass chamber encloses powerful UV light bulbs and as the water passes through the bacteria are killed by the concentrated waves. The UV sanitizer almost sterilises the water. It will definitely reduce the amount of bromine you need to add.

Can you deliver abroad ?
Yes, we can ship worldwide. As each customer has specific requirements, we can quote precisely for any international shipment. We will try at all times to provide you with the best freight service at the lowest rate. We also have distributors and authorised dealers outside France. Our tubs are delivered in flat pack form, which reduces transport costs. Delivery is really not so very expensive, you would be surprised. Don’t hesitate to ask us to quote!

How can I order a MAISON PELETIER® oak tub ?
Once you have clicked on your choice of oak tub, cover and other options on the Order page, and completed the contact information form, we will send you a detailed quote, including transport costs. Please make sure you enter your postcode or zip code. We will contact you by email, fax or phone with the total cost. We will not start work on your tub until we receive your confirmation via the order form. Payment can be made by money order, wire transfer or bank draft. Our team will be delighted to answer any questions you may have about our oak tubs, or about hot tub bathing generally. Delivery time depends on our stock of seasoned oak at the time you order. In Europe, the delay is generally only 3–4 weeks at most, even if we are temporarily out of stock.

What is the best way to heat the oak tub ?
You can use electricity (standard version – single, two-phase or three phase power supply possible) or a heat exchanger (economical alternative option) connected to a boiler using propane, natural gas, or even wood fuel. Or you can combine the two systems.

How long will it take to heat my oak tub ?
It takes about one hour per degree Centigrade to reach the normal temperature with the electric heater. If you use the heat exchanger, the water heats up much faster. How long you need will obviously always depend on the temperature you start from and on the volume of water. Always cover the tub when heating the water!

Is there a risk of frost damage when the outside temperature drops below O°C ?
Our electric spa package includes a safety device (thermostat and freeze protection) that keeps the water warm and moving during cold weather (a minimum temperature of 15° C is maintained at all times). All instrumentation is safely housed inside the rain-protected technical cabinet. Our tubs are made to be used in cold weather! The 35 mm thick oak staves give excellent thermal insulation. The tub must also have a good insulating cover.

Can the oak tub be left empty ?
Oak is a natural material and has a great capacity to expand. So it is better not to drain and refill the tub too often. However, your tub can be completely dried out if you intend to leave it unused for a long period of time (e.g. 6 months). Otherwise, it is always better to keep some water at the bottom – 10 cm will do – to ensure the seals remain tight. If you intend to drain the tub, make sure you drain the heater, pump and filter too.

What maintenance do you recommend ?
To keep the oak tub clean inside, regularly monitor all chemical levels (see our Water Control page). To clean the inside of the tub, use a soft scrubbing brush with a solution of a diluted spa cleaner, and rinse out well. Unlike synthetic materials, oak tubs never crack or flake.
We recommend all users to protect their tub with a mineral oil (of the type used for treating outdoor wood surfaces) on the outside only (never inside), also the steps and the technical cabinet, in order to maintain the original shade. The tub is delivered protected unless you specifically request otherwise. However, if you do not wish the oak to take on a natural grey coloration as it weathers (though some tub users prefer it), just let us know.

I get foam in my tub, what should I do ?
Clothes or soap residues introduced by users can cause foam to develop. Use a foam dissolver (antimousse) to get rid of this problem.

What foundation do you recommend ?
The diameter of the concrete foundation depends on the size of the tub. We can supply you with a sketch. Make sure the surface is strong enough to support the weight of a full tub. It’s best to consult a professional.

How hard is it to keep the water clear and clean ?
Many tub users change the water frequently and use only small quantities of chemicals. However, the water itself can be expensive, and if you want to keep the same water for a long period of time, it is essential to sanitise it. Please see our water control page.

When and where are your oak tubs mostly used ?
About 80% of tub users use their tub nearly every day. Others keep them at weekend or holiday homes. Most tubs are located in gardens or yards, close to the house for ease of use 365 days a year. Oak tubs can be installed anywhere, whatever the climate. They are found in England, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland… and all over the world.

How hard is it to install an oak tub ?
Our oak hot tub kits are quite easy to assemble . It is a full day project. Delivery in kit form means there are no problems of site access.

Do you provide a guarantee ?
Because of the natural durability of oak, your tub will give you many years of service. Our electric spa pack is guaranteed for 24 months, and our oak tubs and accessories in wood are guaranteed for three full years against defects in materials or workmanship.
